 The RMACRAO Annual Meeting is taking place July 10th through July 12th at the University of Denver in Denver, Colorado! DU is excited to be hosting this year and we want to welcome everyone to our beautiful campus.

 Hotel Information

 Since Denver is centrally located in the region and it will be difficult to gauge the amount of rooms needed, RMACRAO will not be reserving a room block. However, we have secured special rates for our members.

Fairfield by Marriott, Denver Cherry Creek is the recommended hotel if you are traveling from outside of Denver. This hotel has convenient access to highways interchanges and the Denver Light Rail. Each individual guests will pay their own sleeping room rates(plus tax) and as well an incidental hold of $100 that is released to the guests card upon check out if no extra charges are applied to the folio such as parking for $12 or room charges from lobby snack market. This Micro-credential will be offered to first time conference attendees with less that 1 year experience in the academic and enrollment services industry. With the completion of a few extra steps during the conference, you could earn a First Time Attendee Micro-Credential! Earners will demonstrate a proficiency in the basic skills, knowledge, and disposition necessary to be successful in an academic or enrollment service operation. Earners will be able to network more effectively, understand the interconnectedness of institutions in the region, analyze policy initiatives, and utilize problem solving strategies to promote positive change.

Parking Information

Parking will be available on the University of Denver campus in a parking garage adjacent to the Community Commons building. Due to the challenge of accurately estimating the number of vehicles, RMACRAO will not be able to cover the cost of parking. An attendant will be on-site to accept cash payments (credit/debit cards are not accepted).

Alternative parking options around the campus include hourly metered parking and free parking for those willing to walk a short distance. We are working closely with the DU Facilities team to finalize the details. Additional information and maps will be posted as soon as they are available.

General Attendee Parking:

  •  this is for attendees who will be purchasing permits each day from the parking attendants. It’s important to note that the attendant can accept credit cards only, no cash.
    • The parking attendant will be stationed at Lot L from 7:00am – 9:30 am Weds – Friday to sell the daily permits.

Wednesday, July 10th

Morning Speaker: Dr. María del Carmen Salazar 

 

 Dr. María del Carmen Salazar is Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs and DEIJA and Professor of Curriculum and Instruction and Teacher Education at the University of Denver (DU) Morgridge College of Education (MCE). Dr. Salazar has authored 38 publications and given 162 scholarly international, national, and local presentations on a humanizing pedagogy, equitable teaching in K-12 and higher education, culturally responsive teacher evaluation, and college access and success for Latinx youth. She is the author of Teacher Evaluation as Cultural Practice: A Framework for Equitable and Excellent Teaching, published by Routledge Press with series editor Professor Emerita Sonia Nieto. In addition, Dr. Salazar is a community-engaged researcher and scholar that advances research with community and publishes research briefs that are accessible to diverse communities. In 2018, she was the recipient of the American Educational Research Association (AERA) Innovations in Research on Equity and Social Justice in Teacher Education Award. In 2022, she was the recipient of the Colorado Association of Bilingual Educators President’s Award.

Dr. Salazar’s professional service includes local, national, and international contributions. Dr. Salazar recently served as Chair of the Denver Public Schools (DPS) Superintendent Dr. Marrero’s transition team. She served on the Colorado Quality Teachers Commission and contributed to the development of the Colorado Teacher Quality Standards. She served on the Interstate Teacher Assessment and Support Consortium (InTASC), a national collaborative that developed learning progressions for teacher licensure, assessment, and development, known as the InTASC Model Core Teaching Standards and Learning Progressions. Dr. Salazar served on the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP) Board of Directors and was a member of the CAEP Equity and Diversity Committee. She served for four years as Associate Editor for the Journal of Teacher Education (JTE), a top journal in the field of education. She has contributed as an educational consultant for organizations such as the Gates Foundation, Branch Alliance for Educator Diversity, Youth Celebrate Diversity, and the Association of Colorado Independent Schools. She is affiliated and founding faculty of the University of Denver Interdisciplinary Research Institute for the Study of (in)Equality (IRISE) and the Latinx Center.

 She is proud of her accomplishments as a first-generation college student, Mexican immigrant, former high school social studies teacher, DU MCE alum, and single mom of three wonderful children.

 

Afternoon Speaker: Dr. Kristy Firebaugh

Dr. Kristy Firebaugh is the Assistant Vice Provost for Student Success at the University of Denver. In this role, she oversees academic advising, retention and graduation initiatives, student success data and analytics, and student success technology. She has helped launch multiple new programs and initiatives in support of student thriving. Prior to this role, she was associate dean of academic planning and communications in the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences. Her doctoral degree is in English Literary Studies.

Thursday, July 11th

Morning Speaker: Julia Pomerenk

 Julia Pomerenk has enjoyed many positions in higher education over the past 35+ years. Since 2017, Julia has served as the University Registrar and Assistant Vice President for Student Services and Enrollment Management at the University of Oregon. Previously, Julia served as the University Registrar at Washington State University and at Pacific Lutheran University (where she started as an admissions counselor). AACRAO has opened opportunities for Julia to advocate during AACRAO Hill Day, to lead the Nominations and Elections Committee, to help with local arrangements for AACRAO annual meetings in Portland (2022) and Seattle (2011 and 2001), and to chair the Awards Committee and the Mentor Committee. Julia served on the 2023 AACRAO Mentorship Work Group and served earlier with the Program Structure Task Force. PACRAO has provided Julia with the pleasure of serving as the first Dean for the PACRAO Leadership Development Institute (since 2018). Julia has also served PACRAO as President and as Vice President for Professional Development. Over the years, Julia has contributed numerous sessions, workshops, webinars, and published writings for AACRAO, PACRAO, and the state associations. She currently serves as Vice President for Records and Academic Services on the AACRAO Board of Directors. Julia earned her BA at Pacific Lutheran University and her MA at the Ohio State University.

Afternoon Speaker: LeRoy Rooker

 

 AACRAO Senior Fellow LeRoy Rooker is the nation's leading authority on the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), a comprehensive federal law that provides privacy protections for student education records. 

As the director of the Department of Education's Family Policy Compliance Office (FPCO) for 21 years, he administered laws and policies designed to help protect the rights of America's 58 million students.

Mr. Rooker is well known in the postsecondary world because of his extensive outreach to the higher education community while at the Department of Education.
